Abyss

The abyssal zone is the pelagic zone that contains the very deep benthic communities near the bottom of oceans. Abyss is from the Greek word meaning bottomless sea. At depths of 4,000 to 6,000 meters (13,123 to 19,685 feet), this zone remains in perpetual darkness and never receives daylight. Its permanent inhabitants – for example, the Black swollower, tripod fish, deep-sea anglerfish, and the giant squid – are able to withstand the immense pressures of the ocean depths, up to 775 kg per square centimeter (76 MPa). Many abyssal creatures have underslung jaws to sift through the sand to catch food. The deep trenches or fissures that plunge down thousands of feet below the ocean floor – for example, the midoceanic trenches such as the Marina Trench in the Pacific – are almost unexplored. Only the bathyscaph Trieste has been able to descend to these depths. These regions are also characterized by continuous cold and lack of nutrients. The abyssal zone has temperatures around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.
The area below the abyssal zone is the hadal zone and hardly any living creatures inhabit it. The zone above is the bathyal zone, and above that is the photic zone, in which the majority of ocean life exists.

Peak - Luray Caverns

For more than 125 years, Luray Caverns has been renowned as a spectacular natural wonder. Today the caverns remain as magical and majestic as when they were first discovered in 1878 by a tinsmith and a local photographer. Millions of visitors have wandered the subterranean pathways and discovered for themselves the natural draw of Luray Caverns.

Begining of the Shenandoha Valley
During the continental drift about 600 million years ago, the Americas separated from the continents of Europe and Africa. A broad, shallow depression from Alabama north to Newfoundland was formed. Then, for 400 million years an ancient sea flooded the area that is now the Appalachian Mountains. Layers of water-borne sediments accumulated on the ocean floor, followed by limestone sediments composed of fossilized marine animals and shells. The weight of the sediments eventually compressed the two layers into metamorphic rock. As a result of the eons-old shifting of the earth's tectonic, or crystal, plates, North America and Africa collided. This elevated and fractured the sea floor, causing the older, underlying layer of metamorphic rock to tilt upward and slide over the younger layer, creating a towering mountain range, the Appalachians.

Growth of Formations
As the large volumes of water drained away, nature began crafting the stone formations left in the caverns today. Inside a cave created by the shifting earth, a solution of calcium carbonate gave up some of its carbon dioxide, allowing a precipitation of lime to form. This precipitation began as a thin deposit ring of crystallized calcite, but continued to collect, creating stalactites that hung from the ceiling. As water drops flowed down these deposits and fell to the floor, deposits built upwards, forming stalagmites. When a stalactite growing down from the ceiling met a stalagmite growing up from the floor, a column or pillar was formed. The growth process, also called dripstone, continues in Luray Caverns. Ours is an active cave where new deposits accumulate at the rate of one cubic inch every 120 years.

The Formations
Stalactites are often formed in a fluted and uniformed fashion from the ceiling down. Stalagmites, too, build with distinct mounds and ridges on their way toward the ceiling. Dripstone, in addition to covering the ceilings and floors, is also abundant on cavern walls. Sometimes dripstone results in massive decorations called flowstone, when mineral-bearing water spreads over limestone walls or builds its deposits from a protruding edge. These crystalline deposits can form draperies and stone waterfall formations.

There are many factors that can impact the shape and color of formations, including the rate and direction of the seepage, the amount of acid in the water, the temperature and humidity content of a cave, air currents, the above ground climate, the amount of annual rainfall and the density of the plant cover.

All coloration in Luray Caverns is natural, caused by different minerals in the seeping ground water. White is the color of calcium carbonate in its pure form. Other elements absorbed from the soil and rock layers create impure forms of calcite. Reds and yellows are caused by iron and iron-stained clays, black is the result of manganese dioxide, and blues and greens are the result of solutions of copper minerals.

Fall Foliage Facts:

1) Leaves of some trees such as birches, tulip poplars, redbud and hickory, are always yellow in the fall, never red.

2) The fall leaves of a few trees, including sugar maple, dogwood, sweet gum, black gum and sourwood, are usually red but may also be yellow.

3) Unlike the bright colors of flowers, which attract pollinators, or the bright "Warning Colors" of many kinds of animals, the bright colors of fall foliage are a byproduct of chemical changes as the trees start to go dormant. These colors have no apparent biological function or significance.

4) The most intense of fall color occurs in in areas such as New England, with almost pure stands of a few types of trees, such as maples and birches, that all turn color at the same time during the short fall season.

5) The most varied fall color, as well as the longest lasting, occurs in areas such as the southern Appalachians, where a dozen or more kinds of trees may change color at slightly different times over the longer fall season.

6) The change in day length (photoperiod) that causes the chemical changes in the trees leading to the bright colors starts June 21, the longest day of the year, as the sun starts to move south and the days become shorter.

7) Leaves have just as much yellow pigment (xanthophyll) in July when they are green as they do in October when they are yellow. In July the darker green pigment (chlorophyll) masks the yellow color.

8) Evergreen trees may shed their older leaves, which often turn bright yellow, in spring rather than fall, but they never drop all their leaves at one time, thus staying green all year.

9) The leathery evergreen leaves of rhododendron are shed individually from time to time over several years; it is not uncommon to find individual rhododendron leaves that have been on a plant for five or six years that are still green, healthy and functional.

10) Bright sunlight is essential for the production of the red (anthocyanin) pigment in the fall leaves: if a black mask is placed on part of a leaf before it turns red, the part of the leaf under the mask will turn yellow while the exposed part will turn red.

Make a Wish

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that grants wishes to children (2.5 years to 18 years old) with life-threatning medical conditions.
Make-A-Wish originated in Arizona in 1980, where a seven year old boy was hospitalized with leukemia. The Arizona Department of Public Safety, hospital workers and members of the community teamed up and were able to grant his 'wish': to become a police officer for one day. Ample media coverage led to the founding of a permanent charity organization, using Greicius' case as a model.

The best known of the butterflies, it is most noted for its long migration from places like Illinois to Mexico. For more on the migration, check out www.monarch.org.

Monarchs are commonly seen throughout Illinois and have a huge range that includes all of the Unites States, southern Canada, Central American and most of South America. This amazing butterfly lays itseggs only on milkweed species. When the caterpillar eats the milkweed leaves, it stores a toxin that makes it very distasteful to predators. The toxin also protects the adult butterfly.

It uses a wide variety of habitats, from prairies to roadsides, to urban gardens to weedy patches. Although it is widespread, it is losing overwintering habitat in Mexico where conservation efforts are underway to save what small amount remains. Loss of this habitat could have a significant impact on this species. Plant some milkweed in your garden and see if maybe a monarch will visit you and lay an egg or two!

Cloud Gate

Cloud Gate is British artist Anish Kapoor's first public outdoor work installed in the United States. The 110-ton elliptical sculpture is forged of a seamless series of highly polished stainless steel plates, which reflect the city's famous skyline and the clouds above.

A 12-foot-high arch provides a "gate" to the concave chamber beneath the sculpture, inviting visitors to touch its mirror-like surface and see their image reflected back from a variety of perspectives. Inspired by liquid mercury, the sculpture is among the largest of its kind in the world, measuring 66-feet long by 33-feet high.

Cloud Gate sits upon the At&T Plaza, which was made possible by a gift from AT&T.

Yes, the fire is here on my blog. I believed smoke can create beautiful patterns until recently I proved myself when I took this picture. Well, how I took it is my little secret and I will let you scratch your brains over this.

Igniting the Spark

I am always fighting with myself to prioritize things in life. Until now my work has always got an upper hand over my desire to try different things in life. But this time, my aspiration for photography has awoken. Thanks to Vishal and Niket for igniting the spark.

"Drawings with Light" is my first attempt at pursuing my hobbies. Playing guitar is still high on my list.

This photograph is special to me since it is taken by my best friend Vishal. I would like to dedicate this one to you, Vishal.

Also thanks to Vishal Barge, my roommate and also a good friend for his advice. Recently I bugged him about focal Length, Shutter Speed and ISO Speed.
